SEMELWEISS UNIVERISTY

Semmelweis University is a leading institution of higher education in Hungary and the Central European region within the area of medicine and health sciences. Its main commitment is based on the integrity of education, research and healing, which make Semmelweis University an internationally renowned centre of knowledge.

As a specialist university, it holds a unique place within the country; its prominent role is demonstrated by the fact that approximately 42 percent of Hungary’s doctors, 70 percent of its dentists, 50 percent of its pharmacists and 27 percent of its health care professionals are Semmelweis graduates.

A truly international community, programmes are offered in three languages (Hungarian, English, German), and international students account for nearly a third of the around 11,000 students studying at the University’s six faculties.

FACULTY OF MEDICINE :

Founded in 1769, the Faculty of Medicine is Semmelweis University’s oldest and largest faculty with over 4,000 students, out of which 50% are international.

The Faculty provides a standard of education that is fully in line with that of other high quality European medical schools. Its Medicine Program (which concludes with an M.D. degree) is available in three languages: Hungarian, English and German.

Undergraduate Program (M.D. degree) The number of students admitted to the Faculty of Medicine is determined on a yearly basis by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Since the number of applicants is two to four times higher than the number of places available, selection procedure is based on the student’s previous academic record.

The 12-semester training period covers at least 6,000 hours of teaching, which is divided into two parts. The first part consists of a two-year preclinical study period in basic sciences; the second part is focused on clinical studies, and lasts for four years. The internship period takes place during the 11th and 12th semesters, and is generally spent at University clinics or hospitals.

Upon completion of the six-year program, students must submit and defend their written thesis and take a final written test and oral exam before an examination board. Having successfully passed all examinations, the student is granted the diploma and title M.D. (Medical Doctor).

FACULTY OF DENTISTRY:

The Faculty of Dentistry educates more dentists each year than all three other Hungarian dental schools combined; over two-thirds of practicing dentists in Hungary received their diploma and professional specialty training at Semmelweis University’s Faculty of Dentistry.

The Faculty was formally established at the Medical University of Budapest (now Semmelweis University) in 1955 by Professor Károly Balogh, who served as its first dean.

The Faculty offers academic programmes at the undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. levels. Its dentistry training programme, which results in a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree, is available in three languages: Hungarian, English and German.

Each year, 95-100 first-year Hungarian students begin their studies at the Faculty, while there are a total of some 70-80 foreign students enrolled in the English and German language programmes. The total number of dental students studying at the Faculty is near 800. The Dental Faculty has 100 full and part time professors and tutors. The major theoretical and clinical subjects are taught by the Faculty of Medicine.

The Faculty of Dentistry has an accredited Ph.D. program called Research in the Dental Sciences.
